Ace Harder

October 9, 1925 — June 8, 2026

Garden City, Kansas

Ace Harder, age 100, a distinguished educator and devoted family man, passed away at home on June 8, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 9, 1925, on his family’s farm outside of Wells, Kansas and lived a life marked by service, education, and a deep commitment to his community.

Ace married the love of his life, Joanne Lee Cribbs, on June 13, 1953, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania; to this union they added four children: Douglas Wayne, Melinda Lee, Marcia Gwen, and Barbara Ann. June 13th would have marked seventy-three wonderful years of marriage.

Ace Harder's journey began in humble agricultural roots, which instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for the land, to farming, and particularly to horses. His dedication to nurturing young minds was evident throughout his career. He taught mathematics for many years, then went on to serve with distinction as a Principal in Ellinwood Kansas, at Shawnee Heights High School in Topeka and as the Dean of Instruction at Garden City Community College. He earned his bachelors and master’s degrees from Kansas State University and his PhD from Kansas University. Those who knew him admired him as a role model and a proud advocate for the education of youth and young adults, fostering growth and opportunity in countless students’ lives.

Ace was a committed member of the Kiwanis Club and an active participant in the First United Methodist Church of Garden City, he devoted himself to service and fellowship. Ace’s patriotism and sense of duty extended to his military service, having served honorably as a Sergeant First Class in the Army during the Korean War. This period of his life reflected his courage, dedication, and leadership; qualities he carried into all areas of his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Joanne Lee Harder; his son, Douglas Wayne Harder, and wife Brenda of Garden City, Kansas; and two daughters, Melinda Lee Harder of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Marcia Gwen Maurer and husband Tom of Manhattan, Kansas. He also leaves behind a cherished brother, Stanley Harder of Topeka, Kansas, along with ten devoted grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

His memory is also honored in the poignant loss of those who preceded him: his parents, Fred and Ada Harder; his daughter, Barbara Ann Harder; his brother, Warren Harder; and his sister, Alice Colton. Their memories live on in the hearts of all who loved Ace.
