David Clyde Masten

Rev. David C. Masten, 61, of Garden City, KS, formerly of Niles, Michigan, passed away at his home on April 1, 2023. A Celebration of Dave’s life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Garden City on April 18 at 7:00 pm. David was born August 4, 1961 to the late Clyde and Shirley Masten in Kansas City, Kansas. Dave was called to the ministry in 1990 and earned his Master’s in Divinity from Central Baptist Theological Seminary.

 

On July 14, 1984, Dave married Julie Mumford in East Moline, Illinois where his father, presided over the ceremony. The family moved around the Midwest before settling in Garden City, Ks in 2015. Dave was a pastor for a decade, then worked as a substitute teacher for several years in Niles Michigan where he found his love for teaching and changed careers. During this time, Dave was also an instructor in social studies for Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, MI. He came to Garden City to teach Social Studies, History, and Government for the Alternative High School. The last two years, he taught for the Juvenile Detention Center. He enjoyed mentoring young people and being a strong role model for his son, Jared, and others.

 

Dave is survived by his loving wife of nearly 39 years, Julie; his son, Jared Masten; brothers, Phillip Masten and wife Amy; Tim Masten; sister, Becky Beard and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
