Donald "Donnie" Duane Hapes, 74, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2026, in his hometown of Garden City, Kansas. He was surrounded in his final moments by his beloved wife and children, the very ones who meant the world to him. He was born on August 23, 1951, in Garden City, Kansas, to Donald Wayne and Irene Beth (Bennett) Hapes. Donnie's life was rooted in the principles of hard work, integrity, and enduring love for his family and community.
Donnie was known for his straightforward nature and heartfelt devotion to those around him. He loved his family fiercely, always making sure they were cared for and instilling in them a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic. His kindness and moral compass guided his every action, reflecting a life well-lived in pursuit of honesty and generosity.

An accomplished mechanic, Donnie owned his own shop for several years, finding joy and satisfaction in repairing and improving just about anything, from boats to classic cars. His talents extended beyond the working day; Donnie was always willing to share his knowledge, especially with his son Tristan, with whom he shared countless hours working on sprint cars for Tristan to race. Classic automobiles had a special place in his heart, bringing out his appreciation for detail and craftsmanship.

The memories they built together are lasting treasures. With his wife, Dawn, Donnie spent fifteen wonderful years in Colorado, where they found peace and joy in the mountains and the beauty of the wildlife, especially the elk that so captivated them both.
