Donald Eugene Johnson

April 6, 1935 — August 29, 2025

Elkhart

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Don Johnson, who peacefully departed this world at the age of 90, in the comfort of his home in Elkhart, Kansas. “Pop” as many of us called him, was such a special man. He was so kind, gentle, funny, and crafty. He loved animals, and it was obvious that animals loved him. Don whittled a wooden ball and chains that he shared with family and friends. If you see one hanging from a rearview mirror in Elkhart, it was probably made by him. He enjoyed collecting cars, knives, coffee cups, and anything else he had two of.

Donald "Don" Eugene Johnson was born on April 6, 1935, in Macksville, Kansas. He grew up mostly in Elkhart, KS. He was drafted into the Army for a few years, then returned to Elkhart, where he later met the love of his life, Virginia Lee Henneberry. Their love story began when Virginia noticed Don in his beautiful 1964 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible. Virginia turned to her girlfriend and said, “I’m going to marry whoever is driving that car,” and she did! They were united in marriage on August 1, 1964, in Clayton, New Mexico. Together, they built a beautiful home and welcomed two sons, Eric and Brent, who brought them endless joy.

Don's legacy lives on through his wife, Virginia, and their kids and grandkids. Brent Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Eric Johnson and his wife Lanell of Elkhart, Kansas, two grandkids, Logan Johnson and Jenna (Johnson) Haynes, and her husband Torren. He also leaves behind his half-brother, Mike Johnson.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Howard Walter Johnson and Winnie Elizabeth (Walsh)(Johnson) Habiger, along with siblings Barbara (Johnson) Boughner, Byron Johnson, and Robert "Bob" Johnson, all of whom he held dear in his heart.

In accordance with Don’s wishes, no formal services will be held, and cremation has taken place. The arrangements are being overseen by Robson Funeral Home of Elkhart.

As we remember Don, let us celebrate a life well-lived, defined by love, warmth, and devotion to family. His spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
