Martin Russell Winter, Satanta, KS, died January 21, 2016, at the Long Term Care Center in Satanta at the age of 94. Russell was born in Bucklin, KS, on September 3, 1921 to Martin Simon and Lenna Lee (Brown) Winter. He graduated from Sublette (Kansas) High School in 1939 and attended Garden City Junior College where he played basketball. On September 3, 1944, Russell married Bonnie Louise Robinson. She preceded him in death on August 28,1992.

Russell began his banking career at the Haskell County State Bank in Sublette in 1940. He later worked in accounting in Denver and Garden City and had insurance, tax preparation, and real estate businesses in Sublette. In 1956 he moved his family to Satanta, KS, where he was CEO of the State Bank of Satanta for 38 years. He then established Satanta Enterprises. He served as Treasurer of the Kansas Bankers Association, State Vice President for the American Bankers Association, and was a member of the Kansas State Banking Board.

Russell played a vital role in the improvement of Haskell County. His involvements included serving as a Haskell County commissioner and president of the Satanta Chamber of Commerce. He was a founding member of Haskell County Grain and the Satanta Community Development Corporation, which assisted in moving many families to Satanta when the United Carbon plant closed. He was instrumental in establishing the Cimarron Valley Golf Course. He was a member of the Satanta United Methodist Church and a 63-year member of the Masonic Lodge, 32nd degree. Russell loved flying his plane, playing golf, traveling, and sharing his swimming pool.

Survivors include: daughters Pat (Jim) Shearman, Nancy (Bill) Anton, Jan (Jim) Groth, all of Satanta, and Ruby (Gaylon) Green of Hutchinson; grandchildren Marc (Stephanie) Anton, Newton, KS, Erik (Angel) Anton, Tucson, AZ, Kristin (Dana) Evans, Wichita, KS, Lora Green, Scottsdale, AZ, and Danelle (Geoff) Schiffelbein, Satanta; step-sister Donna (Tom) Miller, Scott City, KS, half-sister Mary Ann (Richard) Duncan, Sublette, half-brothers Larry (Marilyn) Winter and Ron (Peggy) Winter, both of Sublette; nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Vera Winter, brother Elton Winter, and sister Romola Burk.

Services will be held on Monday, January 25, at the Satanta United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta. Memorials to Cimarron Valley Golf Assoc., Satanta United Methodist Church, or Satanta Aging.
Friends may call Saturday 12PM to 8PM and Sunday 5PM to 8PM at the funeral home.
