Moira Jean “Jeanie” Dey, 76 of Garden City, KS passed away Friday, September 6, 2024, at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City. The funeral home will be open to sign the register book on Sunday, September 15, 2024 from noon until 8 p.m. The visitation will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, September 16th at the funeral home. Jeanie’s life will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday, immediately following the visitation. In lieu of flowers Jeanie’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to Finney County Humane Society, 124 North Fleming, Garden City, KS 67846.
Jeanie was born February 26, 1948, to the late Henry and Maria Freeman in Davenport, Iowa. She graduated from Davenport West high school in 1966 and went to work at the Good Samaritan’s in Davenport, Iowa as a nurse’s aide. While at a square-dancing festival in Ottumwa, Iowa, Jeanie was asked to dance with a newcomer’s son. Jeanie was under the impression that she would be dancing with a young boy, much to her surprise, she was introduced to young college student, not the adolescent boy she was expecting. Jeanie and her new dance partner, Robert Dey dated for a while before getting married on August 1, 1970, in Davenport, Iowa.
The newlyweds soon moved to Oakley, Kansas where Jeanie continued to work as a nurse’s aide at the Good Samaritan. In 1976, Bob’s job brought the family to Garden City where she worked at St. Catherine’s Hospital in the kitchen and later, in the laundry department before retiring in 2006. In retirement, Jeanie found she had too much time on her hands, so she went to work cleaning for Iris’s Cleaning Service.
Outside of work, Jeanie was an avid supporter YMCA Wrestling team with her and Bob’s Coaching and dedicated 48 years to supporting Kansas Youth Wrestling, where she served on the district board of and directors as well as the on the Kansas state board of directors. She loved square dancing, bowling and playing softball and was a member of Ruth Johnson’s Septic Bowling and Softball Teams.
Jeanie is survived by her loving husband, Robert “Bob” Dey; her six children, none by blood, but cherished and loved as her own, Troy Collins, Cass Bowker, MAJ Jordan Nichols, USAF; Dustin Briggs; Ryker Carter and Beth Johnson; grandchildren, Katelyn Allen; Holly Williams, Hunter Collins, Rhyan Briggs, Lily Briggs, Julian Briggs, Samuel Bowker, David Bowker, Chance Bowker, Madelynn Nichols, Maddox Nichols, Tavein Carter, Gemma Carter, and Autumn Carter as well as relatives in Arizona.
