Richard LeRoy Appel, born on May 29, 1945, to Roy Harold and Loueda Mabel (Rich) Appel, in Healy, Kansas. He passed away on July 9, 2025, in Garden City, Kansas. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final moments, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love and laughter.

Richard attended Mechanics School in Fargo, North Dakota, where he developed skills that led him to a fulfilling career as a systems control operator for Sunflower Electric. He also owned R and D Electronics where he serviced various electronic equipment. Richard later owned Dick's Pro Style Lures, where he made fishing rods and lures by hand. His professional journey, marked by dedication and hard work, culminated in his retirement in 2013, at which point he fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing his dream motorcycle, a Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle.

An avid outdoorsman, Richard enjoyed spending his time fishing and creating unique fishing poles and lures, which showcased his creativity and passion for the craft. His spirit was complemented by a fun-loving personality, making him a joy to be around. He was deeply involved in his community, serving as a member of the Elks Lodge, Legion Riders, and Vets for Vets, where he fostered connections with others through shared interests and values.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Diane, with whom he shared their home in Garden City, Kansas. He is also survived by his daughter, Kimberly Dunlap, and his two grandsons, Brandon and Matthew Dunlap, all residing in Garden City, Kansas. Additionally, he is remembered by his nephew, Kevin Ivey, and his wife, Ruby, also of Garden City, Kansas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Loueda Appel; his sister, Loretta Kay Henderson; and his brother, Harold Duane Appel.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society and the Finney County Humane Society, in care of Robson Funeral Home, 620 North Main Street, Garden City, Kansas 67846.

A book signing will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M., and Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 10 A.M. to 8 P.M., at Robson Funeral Home, Garden City, Kansas.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, July 18, 2025, at Robson Funeral Home in Garden City. 

Family and friends are invited to honor and remember Richard, celebrating his life, accomplishments, and the warmth he brought to all those around him. The family has requested that everyone dress casually and wear their favorite concert shirt or Harley-Davidson shirt.
