Ruth Louise (Knowles) Horton

December 15, 1936 — April 12, 2026

Hugoton, KS

Ruth Louise (Knowles) Horton, a cherished soul and loving mother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the age of 89, at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas. Born on December 15, 1936, in Satanta, Kansas, she was the beloved daughter of Homer and Cecilia (Groth) Knowles.

Ruth’s journey through life was marked by deep devotion to her family and community. She graduated from Satanta High School before meeting and marrying Roy Trent Horton on July 23, 1961, in Satanta. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Scott Alan and Kay Marie, weaving a family life rich with love and joy.

As a devoted mother and active member of the Hugoton community, Ruth embraced every moment spent supporting her children. From attending sports events to engaging in church activities, there were few days without her warm presence and encouraging spirit. A faithful member of Hugoton First Christian Church, she generously gave her time and heart to the children of Hugoton and beyond. Ruth’s countless letters and cards carried words of encouragement and faith, inspiring those around her to live with hope and kindness. Her tender care extended to preparing funeral dinners for church members, where her beloved pies—known for their exceptional crust—brought comfort during difficult times. Her vibrant and loving spirit was a beacon of support and prayer for many in the Hugoton community.

Ruth and Roy shared a passion for travel and adventure, spending winters as snowbirds in South Texas and enjoying camping trips in their RV. While Roy fished, Ruth cherished the peaceful moments of relaxation, their shared love of life strengthening their bond.

To all who knew her, Ruth Horton was one of a kind—a shining light whose warmth and encouragement touched countless hearts. Her legacy of love, faith, and community will forever be cherished.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Scott Horton of Wichita, KS, and Kay Shurtleff of Hugoton, KS; her brother, Robert Knowles, and wife Sandra of Satanta, KS; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Cecilia; her husband, Roy; her grandson, Cole David Twilligear; and her brothers, Leland and John Knowles.
