Vernon Raymond Schweer, age 84, peacefully passed away on September 4, 2025, surrounded by the warmth of his loving family. Born October 11, 1940, in Garden City, Kansas, he was the cherished son of Raymond Frank and Lydia (Mai) Schweer.
In a delightful twist of fate, Vernon met his soulmate, Joan Joye (Brinkmeyer), during a Happy Hustlers 4-H club meeting. It was truly love at first sight—two hearts united by a passion for livestock and a fondness for the 4-H clothing revue. Their journey together blossomed into a beautiful marriage on August 12, 1962, at the Garden City Lutheran Church, becoming proud parents to four wonderful children: Sonya, Sara, Matt, and the late Vernon II.
Vernon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who poured love into his family and treasured every moment with them. A lifelong supporter of his beloved K-State Wildcats, he proudly held season tickets for both football and basketball, cheering on his teams with unwavering passion and infectious enthusiasm.
Beyond his devotion to family and sports, Vernon was a guiding light to his students and a steadfast supporter of 4-H and Agricultural Education/FFA programs across Kansas. His legacy in agricultural education and the sheep industry endures in the many lives he touched. He found great joy in mentoring young sheep producers, proudly sharing his knowledge as they pursued their own journeys in raising sheep and other agricultural endeavors. Evenings often found him on the front porch, quietly watching the corn grow, hoping for rain, and enjoying the loyal company of his Great Pyrenees, Cooper. Vernon also enjoyed the fellowship and meals at the Time Out Sports Bar and Grill in Garden City.
Vernon’s legacy continues through his daughters, Sonya Joan Roberts and husband Rickey, and Sara Suzan Gleason, along with his son, Matthew Samuel Schweer. He will be lovingly remembered by his seven grandchildren: Bryce Roberts (Haley), SaRae Graves (Joe), Landon Roberts (Kassidi), Bryleigh Schweer, Caden Schweer, Grady Gleason, and Grayson Gleason, as well as his precious great-granddaughter, Raleigh Graves, who will all dearly miss their grandpa. He is also survived by his sister, Arlene Fugua (Kent), along with their daughters, Angie Simon (Ted) and Jennifer Jones (Cliff), and two sisters-in-law, Juanita Regehr and Charlene Neill (John), and their children. Vernon treasured attending the activities of his loved ones.
Vernon now joins the ranks of his beloved wife, Joan, and son, Vernon Raymond Schweer II, as well as his parents, who preceded him in death.
In honor of his unwavering support for youth and education, a memorial has been established for the Vernon Schweer Memorial Fund to benefit 4-H and FFA programs across Kansas. Those wishing to contribute may make checks payable to "Vernon Schweer Memorial Fund," in care of Robson Funeral Home, 620 N. Main Street, Garden City, Kansas.
