Virginia "Ginger" Carol (Phifer) Mostrom

July 13, 1944 — June 14, 2026

Hugoton, Kansas

Virginia “Ginger” Carol (Phifer) Mostrom, aged 81, departed this life peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by the loving presence of her family. Born to Glen John and Bessie Virginia (Cunningham) Phifer, Ginger’s early years were marked by profound experiences that shaped her character. Though she faced the sorrow of losing her father at the tender age of nine. Her mother remarried Harry Leonard, and this union brought four more siblings into her world: Clifford, Jerry, Gary, and Denny.

Growing up in Hugoton, Ginger cherished the time spent on the farm alongside her brothers. Her education journey led her to a Methodist boarding school in Miltonvale, Kansas, where she attended high school and found joy in the rhythm of boarding school life and her return to the farm each summer, often traveling back and forth by train or bus. Further honing her grace and poise, she attended Patricia Stevens Finishing School, embodying the elegance and refinement she cherished and later passed lovingly to her daughters.

In August of 1964, Ginger met her soulmate, Oscar Gary Mostrom, affectionately known as Boz, and they married on February 20, 1965, at the United Methodist Church of Hugoton. With gentle humor, she often recalled marrying a firefighter who would become a farmer, illustrating the harmony and partnership that defined their life together. Family stood at the heart of their existence; Sundays were reserved for church and family time with their four daughters: Casyn, Susan, Gina, and Lisa.

Ginger and Gary farmed side by side for 40 years until their retirement, reflecting a steadfast commitment to one another and their way of life together. They embraced life’s journeys, becoming longtime snowbirds in Quartzsite, Arizona, and delighting in shared travels with Gary’s brothers and friends. They managed to travel to every State in the continental US.

Known for her sweet and loving nature, Ginger carried herself with impeccable grace, always composed and gracious. A woman of deep faith, she raised her children in the First Christian Church of Hugoton and remained an active member until relocating to Wichita, where she embraced new friendships and enjoyed activities such as painting, dancing, and bean bag baseball, and she had a ball.

Cherished family gatherings with her daughters and their families were a source of great joy for both Ginger and Gary, as they delighted in watching their grandchildren flourish. Ginger’s legacy lives on through her daughters Casyn Ziegler (with husband Marc of Bennington, KS), Susan Slief (with husband Roger of Hugoton, KS), Gina Tyler (with husband Todd of Tonganoxie, KS), and Lisa Stewart (with husband Sam of Derby, KS); her brother John Phifer and Margaret of Garden City, KS; twelve grandchildren: Aubrey, Heath, Michael, Caitlyn, Tana, Andy, Annie, Hayden, Hailey, Emma, Eli, Maggie, and ten great-grandchildren, with two more soon to arrive, along with numerous other relatives and friends who hold her memory dear.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Gary; sister, Barbara Shelton; and brothers Clifford, Jerry, Gary, and Denny.

A memorial has been established in her honor for the First Christian Church or Pheasant Heaven Charities, through Robson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 236, Hugoton, Kansas 67951.
