Walter Jay McClure

Walter Jay McClure, born on March 3, 1935, in rural Stevens County, Kansas, to Jay Gould and Mattie (McMillan) McClure, has left us on August 10, 2026, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

Walter's journey was one of profound commitment and love for his community and family. From the vast Kansas plains, he pursued a higher calling, obtaining a PhD in Agronomy and shaping future generations as a college instructor at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Yet, his heart remained with the land, where he found fulfillment as a rancher and farmer in Stevens County. His passion for craftsmanship blossomed in his role as a 4-H woodworking leader, earning him numerous Grand Champion Ribbons at the Stevens County Fair, guided by his belief that "past performance is a predictor of future expectations."

Walter's dedication to service extended beyond academics and agriculture. His honorable service in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 exemplified his unwavering sense of duty. For over fifty years, Walter was a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church, embodying faith and integrity. Through his work with the Kiwanis Club and contributions to Liberal Camp Gideon's International, he left an indelible mark on his community.

On December 23, 1961, Walter married his beloved Dorothy May Mapp at the United Methodist Church in Tyrone, Oklahoma. Their shared journey brought forth a loving family. He is survived by Dorothy, his sons Joel and Benny, Benny’s wife Lalane, daughter Janel Wagner and her husband Chris, nine grandchildren, Emma McClure-Schaffer, Toby McClure, Jay McClure, Molly Smith, Noah Wagner, Carter McClure, Hannah Wagner, Max McClure, Lindy McClure;  his brother Wayne, and sister Faye Figgins. Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Gerald, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Karen Sue Platt-McClure.

Walter's legacy as a servant leader, dedicated educator, and cherished family man is etched in the hearts of all who knew him. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on August 17, 2026, at 6 P.M., at Bethel Friends Church in Hugoton, KS, followed by fellowship and snacks with the family. He now rests in peace at Hugoton Cemetery.
