Walter Jay McClure

Walter Jay McClure passed away on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton. For the past few years, Walter has faced health challenges.

Walter was born March 3, 1935, in rural Stevens County, Kansas, to Jay Gould and Mattie (McMillan) McClure.

Walter and Dorothy May Mapp were married on December 23, 1961, at United Methodist Church, Tyrone, Oklahoma.

Walter’s life was richly woven into the fabric of Stevens County. From his earliest days on the Kansas plains, he demonstrated a commitment to education, service, and community. After dedicating himself to higher learning, he earned his PhD in Agronomy, forging the path for a distinguished career. Walter shared his knowledge as a college instructor at Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma. In addition to shaping young minds in the classroom, he worked the land as a rancher and farmer in his beloved home county, honoring the values of hard work and stewardship. Service to the country was deeply important to Walter, who served honorably in the United States Army from February 1958 to 1960. His sense of duty extended far beyond his military years, as he became a cornerstone of many local organizations. A devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church of Hugoton for fifty years, Walter embodied faith and integrity in his daily life. He also dedicated more than five decades as a member and treasurer of the Kiwanis Club, where he helped advance the mission of service and goodwill in the community. In 1999, Walter contributed generously to Liberal Camp Gideon's International, reflecting his lifelong commitment to giving back.

Walter is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, who was his steadfast companion through life’s journey. His children also survive him: Joel T. McClure and Ben J. McClure, along with Ben's wife, Lalane, and his daughter, Janel G. Wagner, and husband, Chris; and 9 Grandchildren. Walter’s family circle includes his brother, Wayne McClure, and his sister, Faye Figgins, each carrying forward cherished memories of their time together.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald D. McClure, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Karen Sue Platt-McClure.

Walter’s life was marked by a profound devotion to faith, family, and the community he called home. His memory will be treasured by those who knew him—as a teacher, a servant leader, a steadfast friend, and a cherished family member. Past performance is a predictor of future expectations!

A Celebration of Life Service to honor and remember Walter Jay McClure will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 6:00 P.M. at Bethel Friends Church, located at 1040 S Jefferson St, Hugoton, KS 67951.

A private burial has taken place at Hugoton Cemetery, Hugoton, Kansas.
